On 3 September 2026 the Karnataka Examinations Authority released two notifications (ED/KEA/28/Recruitment/2026-RPC and ED/KEA/29/Recruitment/2026-KK) for 247 Principal posts in Government Pre-University Colleges. Who Can Apply – Eligibility in Plain Words

I want to be very clear here because many people get confused.

You must currently be a regular lecturer in a Government Pre-University College under the School Education Department (Pre-University Education), Karnataka.

You need at least ten continuous years of regular teaching service in that cadre.

Your probation period must have been successfully completed and formally declared.

You must clear the Karnataka Civil Service Computer Literacy Test on or before 31 December 2026.

There is no upper age limit in the usual sense. As long as you are still in service and meet the ten-year requirement before superannuation, you can apply.

Private college teachers, aided college teachers, guest lecturers, and open-market candidates are not eligible. The notification treats this as an internal selection.

Pay Scale and What the Job Actually Offers

The revised 2024 pay scale for these Principal posts is ₹90,200 – ₹1,59,200.

The detailed structure given in the notification is:
₹90,200 – 2,300 – 99,400 – 2,700 – 1,15,600 – 3,100 – 1,34,200 – 3,500 – 1,55,200 – 4,000 – ₹1,59,200.

On top of the basic pay you will get DA, HRA, and other government allowances. Your existing pension status (whether NPS or OPS) continues without change.

This is a Group-A post, so the administrative responsibilities and the status that come with it are significantly higher than a regular lecturer position.

Exam Pattern – Three Papers, 450 Marks

The selection is based on a written examination of three papers followed by document verification.

All three papers carry 150 questions and 150 marks each. Each paper is three hours long. The total is 450 marks, but only Papers 2 and 3 count for the final ranking.

Paper 1 – Kannada Language (Qualifying)

150 questions, 150 marks, 3 hours.

This paper is only qualifying. You need a minimum of 50 marks. The score is not added to the merit list.

It tests reading comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, précis writing, official Kannada terminology, and English-to-Kannada translation.

Paper 2 – General Studies (Merit Paper)

150 questions, 150 marks, 3 hours.

Negative marking of 0.25 for every wrong answer.

This paper covers:

• Karnataka Civil Services Rules (KCSR) – leaves, pensions, joining formalities
• Classification, Control and Appeal Rules 1957 and Conduct Rules
• Karnataka Financial Code, Treasury Code, and Budget Manual
• Karnataka Education Act 1983 and related PU departmental circulars
• Adolescent psychology, institutional pedagogy, campus grievance handling, POCSO, and statutory college committees

One important practical point: if the exam is conducted offline on OMR sheets, there is a fifth option (circle E). If you do not want to attempt a question, you must shade the fifth circle. Leaving all five circles blank still attracts a 0.25 penalty. This is a fraud-prevention measure used by KEA.

Final merit is prepared only from Paper 2 + Paper 3 (out of 300 marks). Candidates who score at least 50 in Paper 1 and then rank high enough on the 300-mark total are called for document verification in the ratio of 1:2.

1. Go to the KEA website and look for the “PU College Principal Recruitment 2026” link.
2. Choose either the Residual Parent Cadre or the Kalyana-Karnataka Local Cadre according to your eligibility.
3. Fill in your departmental KGID number, original appointment order details, probation confirmation reference, and total continuous service.
4. Upload a recent passport photograph, signature, service certificate, caste/income certificates in the prescribed forms, and (for KK cadre) the Article 371(J) certificate.
